House insulation techniques
Ensuring window seals and replacing glass with triple-pane windows can keep cold air out.
As winter approaches, it's time to warm up your space. Besides heating, what other methods can make rooms warmer? For older, already renovated houses, problems with drafts can be solved by repairing windows and door frames. For new houses under construction, adding interior insulation layers or soft upholstery can make the house warmer.
Strengthen interior wall insulation
New houses now have exterior insulation during construction, while older houses used interior insulation. Cui Tao, manager of the decoration engineering department at Jinchao Decoration, told the Beijing News reporter that interior insulation in older houses is typically foam board, a material that is environmentally unfriendly and flammable, and is usually severely aged. During renovations, the interior insulation must be redone.
Regarding whether interior insulation is needed for the ceiling, Cui Tao cautions that because wall paint is heavy, there is a risk of it falling off over time, so interior insulation is not recommended to avoid safety hazards.
Replace weak windows
Windows are the largest source of cold air in a house. If the windows are old, such as aluminum alloy, steel windows, or old plastic steel windows, and the seals are not tight, the indoor temperature may not rise. Therefore, old windows should be replaced with thermal break aluminum alloy windows, which have tighter seals. If the glass is single-pane, it is best to replace it with double- or triple-pane glass to prevent cold air from entering. On the other hand, the installation precision of the windows can be improved, and sealing strips can be added to reduce air leakage.
Insulate the balcony
If there are floor-to-ceiling windows and bay windows, check if the gaps between the windows and the walls are filled completely. If there are gaps, fill them with heat-insulating and heat-preserving materials to prevent drafts.
Many families now integrate walk-in balconies with the house. Because there is no longer the isolation of windows and walls, the house's heat insulation coefficient will suddenly decrease, and the temperature cannot be guaranteed. Generally, balconies are not insulated during building construction, so during renovation, for insulation, heat insulation can be done on the walls, ceiling, and floor of the balcony.
If the "door and window linked" structure of an old house is to be removed, interior insulation can be done on the balcony. If the balcony walls are to be painted, the insulation material (extruded polystyrene board) is placed, a light steel keel frame is built, then a layer of gypsum board is sealed, and crack prevention treatment is done before puttying and painting. If the walls are to be tiled, the extruded polystyrene board is fixed, and then lightweight bricks are laid before tiling to avoid hollowing of the tiles due to the different expansion coefficients between the light steel keel and cement mortar.
Condensation prevention
Poor quality house insulation can also lead to condensation. The main places where condensation occurs indoors now are pipes. If the pipe water is too cold and the indoor temperature is too hot, pipe condensation will occur. Cui Tao told the Beijing News reporter that old galvanized pipes are prone to condensation, but now many water pipes are PPR pipes, and condensation is less common. The solution is to wrap a layer of anti-condensation material around the outside of the pipe. In addition, he pointed out that there is no anti-condensation project in normal water renovation during decoration. Consumers who need anti-condensation treatment must request it separately from the decoration company.
■ Insulation Tips
Fireproof and insulating doors
When installing doors, you can choose fireproof and insulating materials, such as those filled with glass wool or rock wool, which can achieve energy saving and insulation effects.
Utilize natural light
As long as windows are used properly, a warm winter and cool summer feeling can be created. In winter, remember to open the windows to use sunlight to warm the room.
Use balcony insulation
Install a door between the living room and the balcony, with a window-style door face, which is beautiful and bright. If the balcony is wide, a row of low cabinets can be built on the balcony wall, which can isolate cold air and provide insulation, and books or miscellaneous items can be stored inside. A thick door curtain can also be installed between the balcony and the living room, which can also provide a certain degree of heat insulation.
